overview
Bringing advanced platform technology to a critical Field Services application
Grosvenor Engineering Group (GEG) are a leader in technical asset management in the commercial space, maintaining and servicing HVAC, Fire, Electrical and other systems for clients across Australia and New Zealand. GEG utilise a bespoke Asset Resource Management System (ARMS) built by their in-house software team. A range of mobile applications were also developed by their inhouse team for field technicians and specific support staff to access critical performance and maintenance data while on site. With all software reaching end of life, Boomworks were engaged to assess the state of the overall software strategy to assist with providing direction for the transformation of the entire platform. The first step being to consolidate the bespoke mobile and tablet applications into a single responsive application.
Process: Uncovering requirements from operations = Exploration
To define requirements for the baseline of the new field services application (MyARMS) the Boomworks Fast-track Exploration program was utilised. With both the existing mobile and tablet applications reflecting undocumented bespoke development tightly linked to the equally undocumented enterprise back-office application, a well-defined process of user engagement and research was required. This enabled the development of a shared understanding and alignment with stakeholders on what existing requirements must be retained, what functions were now redundant and how new features could be introduced to streamline work on-site and improve data input accuracy.
Outcome: Ongoing design and delivery to support the roadmap
While it was not possible to deliver an MVP and iterative release program due to operational constraints, we undertook an agile design and delivery approach running concurrently with extensive concept design and validation sessions with various user groups. This experience design approach both helped refine the final application and also assisted with building advocacy within the internal user-base as they were able to experience their feedback and input being incorporated into the application.
The MyARMS application introduced an entirely new, modern and extensible codebase from which further applications have been based to continue the transformation of the remaining Grosvenor platforms.
